Václav Havel dies

Václav Havel was a poet, essayist and dramatist but also a political figure whose activism and imprisonment in the 70s led to a presidency of the first Czech Republic. In fact, the literary figure and politician blended marvelously in this one individual. Here's someone whose writings chronicled the politics of a nation he helped to liberate from its Soviet oppressors. Here was a poet-prince.

How wrong Plato was!

Thanks for posting this tribute to Vaclav Havel, Conrad! I'd like to post a poem or something on my blog, & I'm hoping someone will write a heartfelt tribute ...

A shy but powerful writer who also became a courageous political leader - we have so few of those in history, & we need so many more in this dark time.

Several tributes to Hitchens have compared him with George Orwell, but Havel is far more deserving of this comparison.

Right on!

Any world leader who's devoted a lifetime to literary work is worthy of great respect.

It's time to eliminate religion and politics from leadership: and replace them with poetry.

Here, here, Conrad! And "take that," Plato!
