I hereby give "Word-Dreamer: poetics" to you. Please share, copy, archive and show to anyone anything you want. It's a shared culture out there: and so let's act as if it were one. A sense of ownership impels me to respect copyright but then how would you know me if I kept it all to myself? I thrive by needing you, needing a culture of Internet readers and needing the only true networked freedom we've got (after Nina Paley).

A Face to a Name (6): "John Henry Newman"
(for Peter Burnell, 1945-2012, who gave me, years ago, my first copy of Aquinas and who was most likely the closest that's ever come to my spiritual hero, John Henry Newman. I saw it in him, however young & brief)
__________
His secretum meum mihi
(from 1979 to 1985)
could've been apportioned easily to me who've seen Spirit
descend on the lake, when it was hegelian
or tried to impress friends (some friends!) who'd smoked and
let youth turn flabby, past all seriousness
Hid in the eye or elegant smile of the saintly (as if I'd know!)
must be at least geese that conform
(as everything'd done I thought by now) to a stinking bit of flat
shale rocks of a world or a child
curious for stars in the sand .The lake as Spirit bodying forth un-
earthed algae pools, to the child-like
that I had seen as doubtful and adamic because I was sick with the
hope of seeing deep. There was no
Henry around, you see, to catholicize and crew it about the quads
and rooms of my schools, not for me
nor a lounging fellowship-style of smart inquiry that ever worked
for the used books studies
of the blue-collar catechumen who'd been always marked by red-
faced embarrassment, afraid of girls
so that purity & eye strain were my primary Notes set in uncial,
my only true writing to God

Why I am not Charlie
“I speak only one language, and it is not my own” (Jacques Derrida)
__________
To begin with, I condemn unequivocally the killing of French cartoonists, journalists and editors of France's very antireligious Charlie Hebdo. I mourn their loss and my condolences go to their families and to a grieving French nation. Absolutely nothing can justify anymore the killing of innocent civilians along purely religious lines. I agree with the Pope's characterization of the event as stemming from a "deviant form of religion".
I am as horrified at this as I was at the attempted assassination of Malala Yousafzai in Pakistan and the shooting of a Canadian Forces member at the National War Memorial in Ottawa. The only real response to religious differences is rational debate and discussion, founded on deep and reverential respect for all religious beliefs and traditions.
However, it's very disheartening to me to see a country that's known for some of the most enlightened contemporary philosophic thought blindly follow a sort of tribal instinct to revile foreign ideas and peoples. I am certainly not about to throw my support behind proponents of a pure unbridled freedom of expression that cares not a whit about the rightness of indiscriminately lampooning and caricaturing religious ideas or figures in the most obscenely graphic images imaginable or, perhaps more importantly, about the consequences of this media assault on ethno-cultural sensibilities everywhere.
Any tenet of free speech must be premised on a mutual understanding of and respect for the right of any belief system to be protected from what can only be seen as unceasing assaults (whether in verbal or artistic forms) on religious faith-traditions and their sacred images and icons. Not to do so is to condone a hate speech rhetoric that has no place in a growing globalized world community There must be limits to what freedom of speech activists, using media resources and their vast market outreach, can say and show.

The Catholic will find himself these days being subjected to similar barrages of anti-Catholic rants and not a few obscene media representations of religious iconography dear to them. They are as offensive to Christians as the anti-Islam editorials and cartoons at Charlie Hebdo are to Muslims. I do not see here a difference.. The most egregious form of this similar sort of purposely offensive caricature came recently in an April 15th, 2014 Jon Stewart Comedy Central skit in which Stewart made an obscene mockery of the holy manger scene. The Catholic League for Civil and Religious Rights and Catholics everywhere have condemned Stewart for this (as I do, too): the crass stupidity and ignorance of a celebrity figure who commands a wide television audience is not to be believed.

If Je suis Charlie is a rallying-cry for freedom of speech without responsible limits and if its goal is to defend pornographic depictions of the sacred prophet of Islam and the sacred holy manger of Catholicism, I do not support it and never will. I support free speech as intelligent and respectful discourse always. Beliefs, customs and practices by which hundreds of millions govern their lives and which are bearers of a sanctity in their own right ought to be accorded better treatment.

Why I'm pro-Life
Rising to the sheer joy
of the leap,
I feel it, too, the inner
by delight
and joy that infects
& really loves
its same: same as rising
and feeling
on its own ( not one
then the other)
one to be

Ab initio: an epithalamium for Josias and Agnieszka
His view was of the free-and-easy and exceedingly
gentle, mbira-like;
of the purple jacaranda, too, that fruits but can't blind
and of Shona elegance to ward off attacks at night
for love of bride
From first to last all these were (to me) like clearing stars,
his music and love

December bird (written as I wait for return of vision)
I 'd love to sit with you, too, splayed
into light, stringing along
and receive teaching (as I know you do)
from the rugose tree
I'd throw out pleasures to the wind
like a true inventor
or go rattling off from time to time--
a perfect wan prophet
And I'd like, when it's time, to stop at a
cute little extinction, too

Responsorial of mine
"Che sola a me par donna" (Petrarch)
_____________
The little i do out of ardent love for
utterly little
if i love! and see it
merge with whatnot, is still for you--
the little i've got
And the primacy of eye and joy over eye,
amounting to the same old
cold of rigid hearts,
is still full value for Christ, is it not?
But what can my beloved of frilly anklet, eye
hunched down by the well, do?
Up or down, pure or not
it will still be just for me the utterly little
i do love,
if i do

| George Grant (1918-1988) |
How delighted that I've discovered a blog dedicated to the writings and insights of the great George Grant, a person I had the privilege of meeting and reading some Plato with in the 70s. I'd like to thank Chris Faiers for posting at his Riffs and Ripples from ZenRiver Garden blog an article on Grant by Ron Dart that led me eventually to Ron's The Owl: George Grant Journal blog.
Now begins what (I guarantee) will be a very long discussion about the social, political and philosophical issues dear to the heart of one of Canada's greatest public intellectuals and scholars.
